The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced Friday that it will begin a phased reopening of southern border ports for Mexican cattle imports next month after shutting them down in May due to concerns over the spread of the New World screwworm (NWS). The first livestock port scheduled to reopen is Douglas, Arizona, on Aug. 24. Additional crossings in Santa Teresa and Columbus, New Mexico, are expected to follow, provided Mexico continues meeting the requirements outlined in the joint action plan designed to contain the outbreak. USDA officials said every animal entering through the reopened ports will undergo comprehensive inspections for any signs of screwworm infection before being allowed into the United States. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said protecting the U.S. livestock industry remains the department’s highest priority, adding that the temporary closure of southern entry points was a necessary step to prevent the parasite from spreading farther north. She credited collaboration among federal, state, local and industry partners for making it possible to safely begin reopening the border. According to the USDA, 42 cases of screwworm have been confirmed in the U.S. since the outbreak was first identified on June 3. Only nine of those cases remain active. Most infections were reported in Texas, with one confirmed case in New Mexico. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) continues to classify the current risk to people and animals in the U.S. as very low, noting that no human infestations linked to this outbreak have been reported domestically. Outside the U.S., however, the outbreak has had a much greater impact. Health officials report more than 189,000 animal infections and over 2,200 human cases across Mexico and several Central American countries.#fyp #viral
