For banks, and any other services, you can show them proof that you are in the process of getting your residency renewal (you get a stamp on the back of your current card after you apply), and they are legally required to give you 2 months extension. That stamp on the back of your card also means that you can continue to stay in Japan for up to two months after the expiration.

This happened to me! I waited too long though and went two days BEFORE it expired 🙃 PayPal got locked, bank got locked, everything was difficult. It came quite close to the end of the 60 days

If you want change the residen card base on the status before, you can apply at same time. For exsample if you are enginering visa apply to extand it too. Then keep the PR applications too so it's still be able to stay and you have a card 😉

I was stressing the fuck out my last renewal just because I waited until the last minute like an idiot, I can’t even imagine if it had taken a long time on top of it. Hopefully all goes well and they get their asses in gear quickly

Unfortunately they are making everything more difficult. I hope with the new fees at least the process will be faster. Btw if you are in Tokyo, in the Tachikawa branch they are usually faster to process but they might scrutinize more

you should applied it personally so if u haven't received ur residency, they will ask u to come back before the expiration and just fill up the renewal application and u will get it right🥰 away
