What it truly means to be a Wallflower?
Wallflower, noun—a person who attends social gatherings or parties but remains on the sidelines due to shyness, introversion, or social anxiety. Instead of mingling or dancing, they typically observe the crowd and avoid drawing attention to themselves. Upon completing ‘The perks of being a Wallflower’ a movie adaptation of Stephen Chbosky’s quintessential bildungsroman ‘The perks of being a Wallflower', The deliberate use of the verb creates a paradoxical meaning in the sense that his introversion is seen as self-destructive and equally advantageous, where the main character Charlie’s quiet and shy persona allows him to be self-observant, empathetic, selfless and emotionally perceptive of the people he loved. Being a Wallflower goes beyond being selfless; it reveals a deeper layer of one's soul—wanting to fit in so badly you’d substitute your happiness for others.
Gift giving: most people see gift giving as something materialistic; however, it is beyond that. A wallflower observes the people they love, making sure their gift fully reflects the soul and character of that loved one, wallflowers are often treated the opposite way, although not by malicious intent. This creates a moment where the wallflower goes through a mind surge, knowing they're loved, but their mind wanders off, overflowing with memories and scenarios that dissuade them. During the secret Santa scene, we see Charlie’s friends stuck in awe at how seen and understood they felt, upon receiving Charlie’s gift, Chbosky depicts Charlie’s reaction to his first gift from Patrick as almost disappointed, hidden behind humour. The art of gift giving could arguably be close to understanding ones’ soul. We get to a point in our lives where a simple gesture that screams ‘I hear you’, ‘I see you’, ‘I understand you’ helps erase the ugly scars left by the cruel, cruel world. Complimenting a stranger, telling your mum you love her, and hugging your friend might seem like a not-so-important thing to do, especially when we must live as young adults in a politically, socially, and economically stressed time. However, we must not devoid ourselves of normal human emotions
