@theipaper: Plug-in solar panels could soon cut UK energy bills, letting households generate power straight from a socket. The government is considering rule changes to allow the cheaper tech, with potential savings of up to £110 a year. doesn't this make it impossible for power to be turned off during emergencies

As an electrician - this is bad. The state of electrics in houses is diar and very few have a consumer unit rated to handle this correctly! Do you have bi-directional rcbos fitted? No, me neither! This is one of the many things that should be accounted for. (and no I don't install solar so I'm not pissed at loosing money)

The mark up on this seems extortionate. Solar panels are sub £60 at the moment unless the cost is in the inverter. Probably cheaper to by the panels with a suitable inverter separately. Retail margins are probably 50% plus.

waste of money
You need good batteries to save the energy and you need a minimum of 6 solar panels ideal if you have a large south-facing garden

Solar panels are great! We've halved our energy bill since installing.

So, does this mean these solar panels transfer power through the plug to the grid? Won't they need some method of recording, or even storing energy? 🤔🤔🤔

It takes demand off the grid, so it'll help reduce bills if the uptake is big for the country

Nah, it may do that in Europe but in UK as soon as you plug in they’ll charge you

The electric suppliers will just put up the unit price if you start using less, so sort of defeats the purpose🤦🏾♂️

this is so good but isn't it dangerous to feed power back into the grid?

Takes years to break even. By then the standing charge will have increased so much that you won’t even save.
