I still implement an old school tool that we used back in the 1900's to protect myself from most AI situations: BOOKS.

Unfortunately, I agree with you. We need to socialize in person, way more, and stop relying on AI for casual things like writing emails, making little decisions and taking over creative projects.

Unfortunately, the answer is going to be socializing in person and working through problems analog.

If I recall right, didn’t a similar (but much less ominous and looming) atrophy happen with the rise of using GPS and navigation ability/spatial memory? If that isn’t me misremembering, that makes the implications even more upsetting because I can recall an era of driving where I got places that now I definitely would offload to a phone for directions instead :|

This is like when vihecles were invented. Gyms became a thing so we can keep exercising to be healthy. We need cognitive mind gyms. Ai is here to stay, we just have to adapt to it.

I feel AI has enhanced my critical thinking and cognitive abilities. I use it more to train me how to do things better where I'm deficient and as a launch point for my own research

When generative ai first came out I used it a lot because I didn't know the downsides or the water use. I absolutely noticed a decrease in my critical thinking at the time because I would just feel the impulse to ask the ai rather than use due diligence to research something or think something through. It's been over a year since using ai like I was and I will say that I feel like my critical thinking is back to normal and has been for some time. I don't think it's a permanent cognition impairment to have used ai in the past, although I do think the allure of the ease of ai poses a risk for humanity to keep sucking them into using it and further diminishing their critical thinking skills.

I appreciate your content, so thank you for that - but this comment section leaves me with little hope for humanity. The amount of people saying "I disagree with the research because..." is wild

i don’t need ai to warp reality. i already spend 99.8% of my life daydreaming.

I follow your content and find some of what you say almost unbelievable. I’m older (42) and a mechanic… I have found so much wrong with what the google AI summarizes that I use the -AI prompt after every search.

I dont believe this at all. There is no way that many people are using AI on the job. I use AI maybe a couple times a week, and mostly its for fun. At best at work, I might use AI to rewrite a sentence that I just can't make sound right.

I use AI daily for work and I don't know if others are having this experience but the writing is getting really bad. Claude is sounding more like a high schooler's chatgpt chat even for complex analyses. I hate it. it's barely saving me any time these days.

Im so glad im not the kind of person that uses ai almost whatsoever for any real answers. Maybe a google search here or there, but i never take it for its face value

On the contrary, AI has been nourishing and encouraging critical thinking and judgment, as well as learning to form healthy boundaries. But I can't speak for others, only myself
