Under this bridge, people experiencing homelessness often sleep on the concrete with almost nothing separating them from the street. That’s where I noticed a very thin woman lying underneath a blanket with what appeared to be a **syringe near her head.** As I walked closer, I encountered two police officers checking on her. One officer repeatedly tried to wake her. She would open her eyes… Then immediately start fading back out. He continued trying until she finally sat up, looking completely dazed and disoriented as if she barely understood what was happening around her. The officers asked if she wanted medical assistance. At first, she remained sitting on the ground wrapped in her blanket. Then she tried to stand. That’s when things got scary. She wrapped the blanket around herself and attempted to walk toward the officer, but her body started swaying from side to side. The officer grabbed her arm trying to steady her… **And seconds later, she collapsed onto the concrete.** The officer had **Narcan in his hand** and again offered her medical attention. She refused. Eventually, the officers walked back toward their cruiser while she remained beneath the bridge. Scenes like this happen in Kensington every single day. People see someone lying on the sidewalk and may assume they’re simply sleeping. But sometimes you don’t know if that person is exhausted, sick, overdosing, injured, or experiencing another medical emergency until somebody actually stops and checks. Whatever brought someone to this point, **a human life is still a human life.** This is why wellness checks matter.
