Hajar's Desperate Search With their supplies depleted, Hajar ran between the hills of Safa and Marwah, seeking help for her thirsty child. Her frantic search is reenacted by pilgrims during Hajj and Umrah. The Miraculous Appearance As Hajar ran, Angel Jibreel appeared and struck the ground with his wing, revealing a spring of water. The spring was the miraculous Zamzam well, a divine mercy for the family. "Zamzam": Containing the Flow Hajar, concerned the water would be lost, began to gather and contain the gushing water with sand and stones, repeating the word "Zamzam". The word "Zamzam" is understood to mean "hold! hold!" or "contain yourself!".
