Today while my foster dog Magenta was at her vet appointment getting updated vaccines, I brought the kids to the Houston SPCA to spend some time with the animals. As an only child, my dogs were my best friends, they taught me empathy, comfort, and unconditional love. Now, as a mom, I want my kids to feel that same connection but also understand the responsibility behind it. It’s easy to love animals, but caring for them takes intention. I believe the earlier kids learn that animals have needs such as enrichment, space to play and companionship, the more compassionate and capable they’ll be as adults. While we were there, we met Jilly, a 1 year old Shepherd mix who has been at the shelter since November 2024. She’s already had her heartworm shots and is so sweet.
