@maisonrickie: Today, let’s talk about luxury consumption and the counter-perspective of the “rational” purchase. I feel like most people view consumption from a purely rational angle and while there is nothing wrong with that, often times, even the most rational people make purchases that are not in themselves rational. Today, we’re following up on my video from a few weeks ago on my Rimowa trunk ☺️ I’ll be in London and then Berlin for a few weeks so this trunk is going to be amazing as I move around
So funny how people are doing the “I thought you were on our side” thing cause he bought a nice bag. If you actually listen to his videos he’s never even inserting his opinion he is displaying social systems. This bag again isn’t a statement of “oh I hate poors,” it is him being motivated to have a luxury good because of the way it makes him feel good based on the way he knows society is.

Any advice on how I can become more superficial and materialistic? I have been giving a lot of money to sick children’s charities- but I think I will start spending it on high end luggage instead. Would you support this idea?

What are you personally trying to signal with your choice of luggage?

Can you elaborate on how some rich people reject this and only buy the bare minimum, simple Walmart wardrobes, only eat McDonald’s everyday, etc. I believe it’s them choosing not to have to make a decision regarding that aspect of their life.

“Jobs to be done” theory deals explicitly with this, identifying that we “hire” products and service to jobs that are functional, social or emotional, the latter two being the most powerful. Beyond basic functionality we all make choices based on personal feeling and social signaling (affiliation or distancing). It’s not only for luxury goods, it’s for everything.

The laptops are also more than their characteristics. People are still buying Macs to signify all kinds of things. I'm never buying Macs to signify the opposite.
