The first antenna that was shown was a large Cassegrain antenna, which is incredibly directional and is what we refer to as a pencil beam. It would never work for a radar. For radar, you want to create an oval beam that is narrow in Azimuth, but covers a large Elevation area, which is where you get the elongated radar reflectors from. Of course, with an array you can also have faster scanning and a flat panel, which is why they are more common nowadays.
