NASA’s proposing a nuclear powered spacecraft for a Mars mission. It’ll be propelled by ion engines, and those engines need electricity to run. Three guesses how they’ll turn nuclear decay heat into electricity.

I hope we eventually discover how to extract energy from atoms directly, and not just boil water, it's lame

tbh, we are FINALLY working on energy tech that doesn't just boil water. China has the first industrial Supercritical CO2 thermal cycle generator system operating now and the US is also working on similar tech, which can yield insanely high efficiency over water boiling systems. Companies like Helion are also working on fusion reactors that use electromagnetic induction to directly capture energy, no chemical thermal cycling a generator needed.
