France was a tagalong for World War II. The bulk of the war was handled by Russia, then the UK, USA, Canada and Australia. I never understood how France received such a large share of the post-war opportunities.

I was a history major in college and took a seminar on the Vietnam war but it was taught mostly from the Vietnamese perspective. I had never learned the details of the war as someone born well after it ended. It was so eye opening. We are always the bad guy.

As an American visiting Vietnam recently, I had such a revelation that all my ideas about South Vietnam “losing” the war were totally U.S.-centric and wrong. Vietnamese people proudly celebrate the reunification of their country and casting off colonial/foreign interests. They are also very welcoming toward American visitors and proud to show off their enduring national pride, culture, and history. It was a massive shift in my perspective, and I am very happy to see it echoed here!
