As recruiter with 17 years experience, I HATE when someone wants to have a coffee chat. Listen, I am juggling 30+ reqs at any given time, I WISH I had time to coffee chat with everyone that slides into my LI DM’s, but that’s just not realistic. You hit the nail on the head with I have not made a deposit, there for I can’t make a withdrawal.” Most often than not, I’m not even the current recruiter working on the role that Joe Monday wants to meet up to discuss. I LOVE the people who keep the message short and to the point, facts not feelings, attach a (good) resume and leave it at that. I swear I could do an entire TED talk on the ideal etiquette for this subject.

When I was laid off back in Feb 2025, I did that. Luckily I did a lot of networking and stay in contact with a majority of my coworkers who referred me to hiring managers for me to get interviews. I started another job April 2025. I did not do the 100 applications a day stuff.

I’ve heard that it’s best to get a referral before actually applying for the role, something within the system.

Jamaican working remotely since 2020 for US companies ✋🏽 I take a similar approach too, focusing on quality over quantity and only applying to roles I feel really connected with. Normally it takes me 3-4 months to land something but I lost my job about 3 weeks ago and got a part-time retainer client this week via LinkedIn 💪🏽

Great advice on how to land another job after a layoff. It’s also super cool you have six months of savings to rely on while searching 🔥

It’s a strategic and smart job search though and it will be successful. I did something similar. Focused in on researching what companies I’d be most interested and aligned with where I was in my career. It proved successful.

I had the same strategy, 9 months later, I'm still searching. I hope it works out for you, we're in different industries 🤞🏾

Best of luck on the job search! I found LinkedIn isn’t linking like it use to. It’s definitely a tough market right now.

I do not like coffee chat requests either. I’m more willing to accept a 15-30 minute virtual chat.
