As an early childhood educator of many decades. if you say it once and they don't respond. go to them and gently lay a hand on them to get their undivided attention. Then say it once more.

I disagree. I have taught the moment. I feel some things are taken too far. My son knows WHY he needs to get up in the morning. He's 12 and has been in school for 7 years. I understand what you're saying but it doesn't apply to everything. I yell because I am tired of repeating the same thing over and over. I have gone weeks without yelling over the same thing and unless I yell the desired response in that moment doesn't happen. I want obedience because I KNOW my son understands. He is just defiant and picks and chooses when we wants to do right.

I would be so interested to hear your thoughts about ADHD kids and yelling. I am working so hard to be even less of a yeller and sometimes I swear the adrenaline from the yelling is the stimulation that powers that motor and suddenly things are done. I don’t know that its fear but it IS novel stimulus. I should probably be paying you for this knowledge…. I appreciate the way your videos get me thinking

I remember being so annoyed that the kids were laughing and being loud (you know what I mean). I really didn’t want to yell at them, but there was something inside me that was raging. I would finally burst, but instead of telling them to be quiet, I’d yell, “Why are you so happy and why am I not part of this fun?!?” It broke the tension for me, got them to invite me in their play at the height of their enjoyment, and ultimately, things settled down…or at least I did, lol!
