@rachelhschneidermd: One of the most surprising parts of a cataract evaluation for many patients is realizing how many lens options there actually are. A lot of people assume cataract surgery is just “remove the cataract and put in a lens,” but there are several different ways to approach it. Basic cataract surgery removes the cloudy lens, but most patients should expect to still need glasses afterward. Astigmatism correction can reduce blur caused by astigmatism and may decrease your dependence on glasses for distance. Multifocal and EDOF lenses are designed to expand your range of vision and can reduce the need for glasses for distance, intermediate, and sometimes near, but they can also come with tradeoffs like glare, halos, and reduced contrast sensitivity. Light Adjustable Lenses are unique because they can be adjusted after surgery, allowing your vision to be fine-tuned once the eye has healed. The most expensive option is not automatically the best option. The best lens is the one that fits your eye, your lifestyle, and your goals. For many patients, cataract surgery is not just about removing a cataract.
