I worked at a molybdenum mine back in 2010. I’ve always wanted to know exactly what it is used for. They told us it makes steel harder and more corrosion resistant. Thanks for explaining more. 👌

The main product sent out of the mine I work at is molybdenum concentrate. Very fine dust that gets everywhere 🙏😭 Also a category one carcinogen 🥰

Molybdenum disulfide (
), often called "moly," is a solid lubricant additive added to grease to provide superior protection under high loads, shock loading, and extreme pressure. It works by adhering to metal surfaces, filling in microscopic imperfections, and reducing friction.
How it Works
Molybdenum disulfide has a layered molecular structure that allows the layers to slide over one another easily, acting like thousands of microscopic ball bearings. As the grease works, the moly stays on the metal surface even if the base oil is squeezed out, providing a temporary dry lubrication film.

The first time I ever heard of Molybdenum, was from an old (Disney, I think) Western movie with a town called Molly b Damned in it, named after the Molybdenum mine in the movie

I made a vacuum induction casting machine to cast directionally solidified molybdenum jet turbine blades for royals Royce generator turbines. I was given some of the failures, didn't know molybdenum was worth so much.

Machined miles of it for high intensity light source cathodes. Tig welded porous tungsten tips into it, then processed the cathodes in a hydrogen atmosphere to impregnate materials into the tips. Made thousands of them over the years. Moly is tough, but not hard.

We use lots of specialty grades of metals in the Oil and Gas industry. One grade of metal being 6Mo (6%Molybdenum) which is very resistant to corrosion and decay but also fairly expensive
