@ancienthistorytoday: Udayagiri & Khandagiri Caves – Jain Guardian Relief Carved into the sandstone hills of Udayagiri and Khandagiri near Bhubaneswar, this figure is part of a 2nd–1st century BCE complex associated with early Jain monastic life under the rule of King Kharavela of the Mahameghavahana dynasty. The sculpture likely represents a dvarapala—a guardian figure positioned at cave entrances. Its posture, with arms drawn across the torso and a firm, grounded stance, reflects a symbolic role rather than naturalistic movement. These figures marked thresholds between the outside world and ascetic interior spaces used by Jain monks. The carving is heavily weathered, but key features remain visible: the compact, stylised body, minimal ornamentation, and integration directly into the rock face. This simplicity aligns with early Jain artistic traditions, which emphasised restraint and spiritual purpose over elaborate decoration. Unlike later Indian cave complexes, these caves were not designed as grand ritual halls but as functional living and meditation spaces. Sculptural elements like this served both symbolic and architectural roles—framing entrances, reinforcing sacred boundaries, and reflecting the disciplined worldview of the ascetics who once lived here. #UdayagiriCaves #KhandagiriCaves #JainHeritage #AncientIndia #AncientHistory
