Oh, how I love being a woman. There have been women gamers as long as there has been male gamers. Women have always been able to play a game with a male main character and still manage to connect with them (Kratos, Arthur Morgan, Desmond Miles, Joel, Geralt, the list goes on forever obv), empathize with them, root for them, hope they get better and/or achieve their goals. Women have never had a problem with male main characters. Because they're human (or at least display humanoid traits and emotions) and women categorically can find what makes them interesting characters, regardless of gender. Men (the ones outraged by the addition of more female main characters recently) can't do that with female characters. They have to be able to "relate" to them. And the only way they know how to relate is if they are male. Not taking into account their personalities, struggles, wants, fears, character development, circumstances. And that's because a lot of men dont actually see women as people. They see them as objects or it seems lately, as opposition or even the enemy. Men who DON'T feel that way (and I have the blessing to know quite a few of them in my life) have no problem with what gender the character is. Because a good character is a good character. End of story. Characters featured in this edit: Laufey/Faye - God of War Ciri - The Witcher Maelle, Lune, & the Paintress - Expedition 33 Sophia - A Plague Tale Lara Croft - Tomb Raider Isabel - Fable Senua - Hellblade Claire Redfield - Resident Evil Rose Belmont - Castlevania: Belmont's Curse Karlach - Baldur’s Gate 3 Alloy - Horizon Jesse Faden - Control Ellie - The Last of Us Jean Gray - Wolverine I know there are more. I tried to focus on characters from newer/newly announced games as the complaining about Laufey is what made me want to make the edit in fhe first place. Of course I also had to sprinkle in some classic iconic characters as well. Women aren't going anywhere, and it's so encouraging to me to see more and more female protagonists. It's about time. Now let's start seeing more WOC (or POC characters in general). Long overdue. #godofwarlaufey #tombraider #womeningames #gamergirls #thewitcher4
