We teach our children to say thank you. But when an African turns to the sun, the ocean or the earth and says thank you, we call it fetish. Brother Ishmael Tetteh questions that contradiction and points to something deeper in African spirituality: nature itself was a sacred text, a way of reading and understanding Life. The sun gives. The earth gives. Water gives. Air gives. Without them, there is no life. Nature teaches relationship, reciprocity and interdependence. In African theology, the elements were therefore not simply things to exploit. They revealed the Divine through the very systems that sustain life. What we were taught to call fetish was often simply gratitude, reverence and relationship with Life. Our ancestors did not lack an understanding of God. Perhaps what we have lost is the ability to recognise the Divine in the world around us. #AfricanSpirituality #AfricanTheology #NigeriaTikTok #BrotherIshmaelTetteh #EthereanMission
