American here, this was popularized before microwaves were affordable for every house to have one. These days it's almost exclusively used when camping. Even that use has lost much popularity in recent years.

I stopped making the microwave ones, just buy a kilo of popcorn kernels & pop them in a pot. It's cheaper but more importantly you don't end up either burning half or leaving half unpopped like in the microwave bags. Added bonus you can't make some with bacon/grease 10/10
