Kwame Ture (1941–1998), born Stokely Carmichael in Trinidad, was a political activist and organiser who served as Honorary Prime Minister of the All-African People's Revolutionary Party. He was a central figure in the American civil rights movement and the Black Power movement of the 1960s before relocating to Guinea in 1969, where he remained until his death. Appearing on Late Night America in 1983, a PBS talk programme hosted by Dennis Wholey, Ture responds to a caller who asks him to elaborate on a remark he made about Jesus Christ not being white. Drawing on biblical text and early church history, he argues that it is impossible for Jesus to have been white and that the white European image of Jesus was in fact based on the artist's uncle.
