When people "without glasses can't see from afar" it usually means they're *nearsighted*, or have *myopia*. Here's the whole complex explanation of what's actually happening in the eye: *1. How normal distance vision works* Your eye is basically a camera. - *Light enters* through the cornea → pupil → lens - The *cornea + lens* work together to bend/refract that light so it focuses perfectly on one spot: the *retina* at the back of your eye - The retina has photoreceptors that convert that focused light into electrical signals → brain → "I see clearly" For someone with normal vision, when you look at something far away, the eye muscles relax the lens so the focal point lands right on the retina. *2. What goes wrong with myopia* People who can't see far without glasses usually have myopia. There are 2 main anatomical reasons: *A. The eyeball is too long* In myopia, the eyeball is slightly elongated front-to-back. Think of it like a rugby ball instead of a soccer ball. Because the retina is "too far back," light rays from distant objects focus _in front_ of the retina instead of on it. Result: distant objects hit the retina as a blurry circle instead of a sharp point. *B. The cornea/lens are too powerful* Sometimes the eyeball length is normal, but the cornea is too curved or the lens refracts light too strongly. That also makes the light converge too early, before it reaches the retina. Either way, the image is out of focus by the time it hits the retina. *3. Why near objects ARE clear* This is the key. When you look at something close, like a book, your eyes do something called *accommodation*. The ciliary muscles squeeze the lens to make it rounder and stronger, so it bends light more. For a myopic person, their eyes are already "too strong" for distance. But for near work, that extra focusing power is actually helpful. So the blurry focal point gets pushed back and can land on the retina. That's why they can read up close without glasses but struggle with road signs. *4. What glasses do* Glasses for myopia are *concave / minus lenses*. They diverge light to make you see correctly
