Former probation/parole officer here. This was my answer when asked similar questions. A little respect went a long way.

it definitely takes a special kind of person to work in a prison. you have to be firm, fair, and consistent to everyone. I always let them know that I treat everyone the same, whether they were on this side of the fence or the other. And yes, Respect is key!

I got this thing I tell myself. treat people they way u would want to be treated, clean other places the way u would clean your home, work the way u would want to get your own work done (yardwork, clean houses, ect.) and most importantly LOVE people the way u always wanted to be loved!!!!!!

I love how you tell these stories and it sounds like you made a very good healthy impact on the inmates. It’s a shame you had to medically retire. But I love that you are sharing the stories now 🥰

My uncle worked death row in Jacksonville. He said Ted Bundy was an arsehole but otherwise the majority of them were decent. He put in 18.5 years, was found to have a debilitating illness where he couldn’t work anymore. The other officers all stepped in and donated vacation and sick days as well as being able to cover all his shifts until his 20th anniversary so he could have his full pension. He loved his job and as long as the prisoners acted like humans they got treated like humans.

The respect all that kept going thru my head was “yassssss this this 100000%” as an ex inmate it was the officers who were chill and weren’t a dickhead to me that I adored and respected the most
