Their first three albums had earned them a following, but mainstream success remained elusive. By the autumn of 1977, the band was searching for a new direction. Perry, whose remarkable voice had attracted the attention of manager Herbie Herbert, was brought in to replace Robert Fleischman and help develop a more melodic approach. Rather than immediately placing Perry at the center of the show, Journey introduced him during the encore. Dressed in white, he performed two songs, including "Lights," before an audience that was still getting used to the band's new musical identity. The reaction was not universally enthusiastic. Some longtime fans preferred Journey's earlier progressive sound, and even the musicians were uncertain how their new direction would be received. Everything began to change with the release of Infinity in 1978. Perry's voice, combined with Schon's guitar and the band's powerful musicianship, helped Journey reach a broader audience. Over the next several years, albums including Evolution, Departure, Escape and Frontiers established them among America's biggest rock bands. Songs such as "Don't Stop Believin'," "Open Arms," "Faithfully" and "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" would eventually make Perry one of the most recognizable voices of his generation. Looking back, that first appearance at the Old Waldorf was far more than the introduction of a new singer. It was the moment Journey began the transformation that would define their legacy.
