@adytum_official: This is Zipple et al. (December 2025) published in Current Biology out of Cornell University. They took lab mice that had lived their entire lives in a cage the size of a shoebox. These mice had deeply established anxiety responses confirmed through repeated testing. They moved them to large outdoor field enclosures where the mice could dig, climb, find food, navigate weather and other mice for the first time. After one week the anxiety behaviors dropped dramatically. The lead researcher Matthew Zipple said the change is about agency, the ability of an animal to change its experiences through its own behavior. The bigger environment gave them more experiences to calibrate against so new things stopped registering as threats. Senior author Michael Sheehan said this has implications for how sheltered lives may be increasing anxiety in young people. The study suggests your nervous system needs novelty and challenge to properly calibrate what’s actually dangerous vs what’s just unfamiliar. #MentalHealth #neuroscience #lonliness #anxiety #nervoussystem

This is so validating, thank you. I had to move to a rural area before having a baby and I've often been stuck indoors and it partly explains my postpartum anxiety and depression. I'm so agitated all the time

This absolutely happens to me. I have a great propensity to isolate anyway and I make myself go outside!

I will say that I have almost felt agoraphobic because I was so stressed as a kid i didnt know what to do. Once I started living on my own life got larger, then I moved from a small town to NY and my anxiety dropped

Totally agree with this. I'm a PhD student which is very isolating by nature. I have to really try to get out and I feel much better when I do

I'm autistic and adhd, and being out in the world doesn't just make me anxious, it sets off all of my issues because my sensory issues go haywire 🙃🙃🙃

Never left the house for anything more than a doctor’s appointment in 6 years. Went hundreds of miles in a car to my mom’s funeral. Sometimes life forces you into the deep end when the stakes are high enough
