Engfa walked toward her slowly, as if any sudden movement might shatter what still hung between them. When she was close enough she stopped and offered a small, careful smile. “Hi.” Charlotte’s answering smile trembled. She missed her so much it hurt to breathe. The word she once used without thinking—teerak—sat heavy on her tongue, but she swallowed it. “Hello, Fa.” Engfa glanced around the quiet dark. “What are you doing out here?” “I needed air,” Charlotte answered. Engfa nodded. Without speaking they walked up the low hill beyond the old tree, the same place they used to escape when the city felt too loud. At the top Engfa spread her jacket on the grass for Charlotte. Charlotte tugged at the fabric until Engfa sat beside her, close enough that their shoulders almost touched. For a long moment neither of them spoke. The night was soft and wide around them, full of the same silence that had once belonged only to the two of them. Crickets sang somewhere in the dark. The air smelled like earth and distance. Then Charlotte’s voice broke the quiet, small and raw and already cracking. “I miss you, Fa. I really don’t want this wedding. I wanted to get married to you… not Mew.” The confession left her in a rush. Tears spilled over before she could stop them, hot and helpless. She turned her face away, shoulders shaking, trying and failing to keep the sobs quiet. The words she had carried for weeks finally had somewhere to go, and they tore her open on the way out. Engfa looked down at her own hands. When she finally spoke, her voice was thick, barely holding together. “If I could do something, Charlotte… I’d steal you from him. I can’t love anyone else. I just keep thinking of you. Every day. Every night. But what can I do? I don’t want to ruin both of our careers just because I want to be with you.” Her own tears fell then, slow and silent, catching the faint moonlight as they traced down her cheeks. She did not wipe them away. There was no point in pretending here, not under this sky, not with Charlotte so close and still so far. Charlotte reached for her hand and held on tightly. “Can you wait for me? Just one year. After the wedding… I’ll find a way to divorce him. Please. Just wait for me.” Engfa turned to look at her. Even through the tears there was a small, broken smile. She lifted her free hand and gently caressed Charlotte’s cheek. “If you learn to love him,” she said softly, “I’ll accept it. One year isn’t long… because I already know I can only love you. No one else. Not ever.” The words undid Charlotte completely. A hard sob tore out of her as she threw her arms around Engfa. Engfa held on just as tightly. They clung to each other on the quiet hill, both crying without restraint—crying because the wedding was still coming, because for now they could no longer be together the way they had been for six secret years. Eventually the tears slowed. They pulled apart with reluctant hands, neither of them able to meet the other’s eyes for long. The drive back into the city was silent. Engfa followed at a distance until the lights of Bangkok swallowed them both. Charlotte barely made it to her bedroom before the door closed. She slid down against the bed, knees drawn tightly to her chest, arms locked around them. The tears came harder now. Engfa’s words echoed—If you learn to love him, I’ll accept it… I can only love you—and each repetition broke her a little more. Engfa loved her too much. Loved her enough to let her go. And Charlotte had only hurt her in return. Across the city Engfa lay on her back in the dark, staring at the ceiling. Tears slipped sideways from the corners of her eyes, soaking into the pillow. She wanted Charlotte back with a hunger that felt physical. She wanted the secret years again, the quiet mornings, the way Charlotte used to say her name. But she no longer knew what to do. So she simply lay there, eyes open, letting the tears fall, and waited for a morning that would not bring Charlotte home. #🌈 #wlw #gl #englot #au
