@codependencykate: Replying to @EkkiR maintaining homeostasis or “status quo” is the function of any system. Change is so hard because it requires people to deconstruct the entire system itself #classwkate

Anytime as a kid I tried to express that the way they said or did things hurt me, I got shamed for it. Everytime I cried, I got shamed for it. And they wonder why as an adult I never tell them things that’s going on in my life. They wonder why I don’t like spending time with the family.

It’s also modeled on sitcoms. My whole family does this. When I got married, I realized that I didn’t have to. My husband never teases in a mean way. I had to relearn how to interact socially with family because I didn’t know another way. We insist that our children are kind to one another. We don’t let them say mean things, behave in a mean way, or use mean language without being reprimanded. Sometimes it’s really tough to constantly monitor their interactions, but we don’t want them getting comfortable treating each other badly. We model introspection, apologize for when we lose our tempers, and reinforce that no one deserves to be treated badly even when we are tired, stressed, or hungry.

Unfortunately when I look back on my childhood, I can only remember the negative teasing things that were said to me. It’s sad to have that as my main theme

I grew up with parents who argued constantly over everything and anything. it was normal to me, but it was horrible to grow up with. all my friends houses seemed so peaceful, and looking back at my childhood I mostly remember the constant bickering. it taints every "good" memory because the arguing is always there. my parents are still married and are even worse now. I keep contact minimal for this and many other reasons.

Are there teenage-boy appropriate shows or movies or content where a healthier dynamic is modeled so I can help break this cycle? I didn’t have this growing up but my kids experience with other parts of the family.

I’m just beginning my educational journey in psychology and I cannot wait until I can articulate as well as you. I still have so much trauma to get through which is the main issue but I’m well on my way ✨

Yeah…damn this is wild to hear from a clinical perspective. Such a shitty dynamic. I wish I could help them understand so my distance makes sense.

Growing up in the 90/00's I think alot of the movies and shows also highlighted toxicities. Little mermaid for example. I often wonder how the media of our upbringing shaped how we viewed our parents.

When this has been done for years and years, how can you provide tools that will work in adolescence and adulthood to repair relationships strained by this?

We are all imperfect human beings. The aim should be to help in such a sad society to bring people together. Societal changes are apparent retrospectively in every generation. Analysis shows that.
