@codependencykate: Replying to @Aura displaced anger + lack of conflict resolution/emotional intimacy skills are the core of this behavior. And yes it’s also true that ultimately we don’t know what happens behind closed doors. It all exists at the same time. Let’s learn from it and change how we respond when we see it so the abuse doesn’t perpetuate #classwkate
is grey rocking the appropriate response to this? I have to be around my kids other parent and he engages in both of these pretty much nonstop. it's pretty simple not to engage in the hostility part, I just pretend not to understand the "joke", but the fake nice seems to pull me in every time and I hate how it makes me react by also being fake nice back. should I just grey rock instead? it's draining, it feels like a job interview.

but as an audience (or friend/family member) there is no correct way to respond to someone's abuse. To ignore or minimize it is enabling. to point it out is too confrontational. You can't blame the audience - they are posting their abuse publicly. That is the nature of the double bind

It’s easy to see the reality when someone gets their feelings hurt by a joke or prank. Is the other person responsive? Do they immediately check in? Do they offer reassurance? If they don’t, it’s not actually about sharing a laugh.

The thing about pranks is that they only work without consent.

This is explains so much of the difference in emotional security between me and my husband. He was an only child who had a very supportive group of adults (mom, grandparents, aunts and uncles) who gave him a lot of attention and one-on-one interaction and activities. I was the youngest child (and only daughter) who was constantly being treated with pseudo (and sometimes actual) hostility and had parents who dismissed it as siblings just teasing. We're all in our fifties and it sounds like I need to go back to therapy.
