@historyresolves: The invention of the steam engine was one of the most important technological breakthroughs of the 18th century and played a central role in the Industrial Revolution. Early experiments with steam power began in the late 1600s, but the first practical steam engine was built in 1712 by Thomas Newcomen, who designed a machine that used steam to pump water out of flooded coal mines in England. Although effective, Newcomen’s engine was inefficient and consumed large amounts of coal. In the 1760s, the Scottish engineer James Watt significantly improved the design by adding a separate condenser, which allowed the engine to use much less fuel and operate more smoothly. Watt’s improvements transformed the steam engine from a simple mining pump into a powerful source of mechanical energy that could drive factory machinery, mills, and eventually locomotives and steamships. As a result, steam engines accelerated industrial production, enabled the growth of factories and urban centers, and revolutionized transportation, fundamentally changing economies and societies across Europe and later the rest of the world.
