@jubilee: Millennial parent discusses the impact of technology on childhood development #parenting #millennialparent #genzparent #middleground #jubilee
I'm all for tech that comes in stages, but some elementary schools are giving iPads to kids as young as kindergarten. I get how progressive that can be for learning, but I feel like it takes away from them getting to learn with more hands-on stuff that could be taught in a more personal way.
I know technology is moving fast, but I still think our kids could go to the computer lab and use the old-school computers for their iReady and other programs instead of getting an iPad right off the bat.
I think what's important is that if we introduce it to them so young, we also need to teach them how to use it responsibly and how not to use it... and why it shouldn't be used that way, in a way they can understand. We should also teach them to spot red flags and encourage them to talk to their parents so their parents can be involved in their development and be a safe person to report things to.
And our education systems should also make parents attend a parental control workshop during orientation so we can all be informed on how to keep an eye on their online activity too.
The more technology advances, the more accessible it can be for people who never thought it was possible, but we don't teach users how to use it. We just hand it to them and expect them to read the fine print (which, let's be real, no one really does).
