@an.i.ma.tion: A clip from “Sisyphus” (1974), directed by Marcell Jankovics for Pannónia Film Stúdió, Hungary. A single unbroken line drawing. Sisyphus begins muscular, enormous. The boulder begins small. By the time he reaches the top, he has been reduced to a squiggle. The summit reveals itself to be a mountain of every rock he has ever pushed. He melts into it, then walks back down. No dialogue, only Jankovics’ own recorded grunts. Nominated for an Oscar in 1976. In 2008, GMC licensed it for a Super Bowl ad and muted the screaming to put a motivational voiceover on top. Jankovics used the money to fund his feature “The Tragedy of Man,” which he had been making since 1988.
