the Monterey Cypress is one of those trees you look at and go… huh. why does it look so weird? and how is nature pullin’ off these crazy stunts?! anyways, definitely one of my favorite tree species of all time because before moving to california, i had literally NEVER seen anything quite like it. (i’m from the east coast of canada, so i’m sure you can understand why lol.) their shape can vary SO wildly depending on where they sit relative to the coastal winds that it always makes me marvel at how seemingly invisible or gentle forces like wind and tides can shape the world around us. for example, if a Monterey Cypress is like, RIGHT on the coastline, perched on a cliff or something, it’ll usually look SUPER windswept and gnarly, and not to mention, SHORT. but move inland just a little bit, like in Crocker Grove where i filmed most of this video, and they soar to staggering heights and seem relatively unfazed by the wind.
