@financial_craic: Reports out today are suggesting that The Minister for Finance @Simon Harris TD intents to model Ireland Savings and Investments Accounts on the ISK in Sweden, with no Capital Gains Tax on the returns in the product. On the surface, this looks great. But does this benefit all investors equally? And what happens if investment returns are negative or interest rates increase. It looks like this is another complicated product when what we need is simplicity. I’d prefer to see CGT and Exit tax rates aligned, allow losses on exchange traded funds, and an increase in the annual exemptions. This still benefits middle class investors and makes it simple for everyone to understand. #ireland #craic

Yeah doesn't seem great. Don't know why they didn't just follow the UK. No doubt they'll just limit it to Life Company funds cause of all the lobbying.

If Ireland copies Sweden, you can have about €26,000 before the annual tax actually kicks in. This is a big step in the right direction if they allow ETFs to be covered under this also!

So if you have been investing in ETFs for the last 5 years do you think you could sell without being majorly taxed?

“Expected”. The government needs to get on and finalise this and stop all the kite flying. It’s going to be crap, no CGT, at startup, but they will be rubbish rates or some other tax down the road. They are not interested in small investors as they have proven time and time again.

This sounds so dumb. Why can't we have a UK style ISA. I put in 30,000 into this scheme you're suggesting. I lose a few quid that year and they want to tax the value of the 30,000? They can f right off

the problem now is the uncertainty in the markets including private equity. Trump has created so many issues. Opportunities though if the markets continue to slide which is looking likely. I think another 20% on top of the drop already, but very few can time a market.

all they have to do is drop the deemed disposal, allow citizens to buy cheap quality etfs at fair taxes when sold - none of this tax on all your savings every year

I want them to keep their hands off my long term investments. I should not be charged for an unrealized gain not pulled.

Yeah exactly what your said just lower the rates exit and CGT to at least match and get rid of deemed and allow loss offset. What they are purposing won’t see much more money in investors pockets over long term.
