I am a medical doctor, and I have seen a lot of this, let me answer a few questions/statements; 1. it is either a permanent or temporary colostomy depending on the reason. If it was for eg rectal cancer, the colostomy is permanent. if it's to protect a surgery done below the colostomy, it is temporary ( Colostomy Reversal) 2. You can't just go and request for a colostomy, oftentimes the decision is made intra -op depending on the findings. 3. Yes, you can totally live a normal life with it, as long as it is properly taken care of just the same way you take care of yourself. 4. my husband has an iliostomy bag for urine bc of bladder cancer and is leading a very normal life just like before . The bag should be changed every 2-3 days which takes only about 5-7 minutes.
