Basically: if volume fluctuates a lot, compression (threshold & ratio) makes it a more constant volume. And the other nobs just let you customize it.

Tooo many use compression incorrectly. I love the dynamics between quiet and loud. Didn’t need it with actual instruments, but when you are grabbing samples from all over to make your music, you are going to get wildly different levels. You have to have a way to level them.
