Last October, I was navigating the news that my baby had a heart defect and would likely need surgery between 4–6 months old, along with the possibility that she might have Down syndrome. And honestly, at the time, the possibility of Down syndrome scared me even more than the heart defect and the thought of her needing surgery, which feels almost crazy to me now. At the very end of my pregnancy, everything suddenly changed. I had to switch from the OB I had seen my entire pregnancy to a high-risk OB, and we changed the hospital where I would deliver. I didn’t know who would be delivering my baby, what her birth would look like, how long she might be in the NICU, or what life after that would hold. There were so many unknowns, and I was scared. If last October me could see me now, holding my little girl and wondering how I was ever so afraid of the possibility of a Down syndrome diagnosis. I wish I could go back and tell her that the unknown is so much scarier than the reality. That this little girl is about to change her life in the best way possible. That somehow, everything would work out more beautifully than I ever could have imagined. Last October, I was afraid of what I didn’t know. This October, I look at her and can’t believe I was ever so afraid. Now, I get to love her, celebrate her, and watch her become exactly who she was always meant to be every single day. I thank God every day for choosing me to be her mom. She is more than I ever could have prayed for 🤍 #downsyndrome #downsyndromebaby #t21 #theluckyfew #nothingdownaboutit
