My fave story from my dad (a Spanish lit prof) was that Don Quijote got a second part because some anonymous person wrote an awful OOC fanfic/unofficial sequel (whether out of love or hatred no one knows) and Cervantes was pissed. He then ends vol 2 of Don Quijote being like “and then he died and there were no more stories of his adventures to be uncovered ever so don’t even try it THE END”

Just to clarify: before Don Quixote—often considered the birth of the modern novel—there already existed a whole tradition of prose narratives known as books of chivalry. These works recounted the adventures and heroic deeds of knights, often in extensive and structured narratives. In that sense, many “novels” technically predate Cervantes, even if they differ from what we now understand as the modern novel.

don quijote IS a great candidate, but in Spain theres a novel before It that defines the "antihéroe" not the same in english, Its called el lazarillo de Tormes, anonymous, It tells the story of a orphan surviving, while depicting the medieval world around him and his rise from poverty, in my opinión the book IS really good and defines much of spanish art, always depicting the world around the antiheros, as our cinema tends to do

I’ve always heard “Tale of Genji” as the answer to this question but it sounds like there were 6 centuries between that and the other works which could more accurately be considered part of the same format progressing towards our modern understanding. A bit like “Were the Vikings the first Europeans to North America or was it Columbus?”

i feel like genji isnt considered by western scholars purely because it wasnt written in europe... like you daid it yourself, it READS like a novel. so... doesnt that pretty nuch prove it?

I’m pretty sure it was The Tale of Genji. At least the first one to be publishable. Like a lot of other people said, western scholars just didn’t count it because it wasn’t a western book.

When I was a kid, in french, we used to learn that La chanson de Roland was one of the first novels(or Roman in french). That never sat well with me. It's very much an epic prose poem. Don Quixote is immediately recognizable as a novel. I don't think it's the Chanson de Rolan = First novel is taught anymore though.
