If you lead with vagueness like, “It depends…” or “There are a lot of factors,” you may think you sound careful or nuanced. But often, it lands as hesitation. What I’ve noticed from senior leaders is that they do something different: they use what they know today, make a recommendation, and make the next step clear. I’ve learned that you do not need perfect certainty to give a recommendation. You rarely have it. The job is not to remove every unknown before you speak. The job is to make the call easier, not more complicated. That means not hiding behind nuance when a decision needs to be made.
