Nearly two weeks after a rider was ejected from a roller coaster and killed, Six Flags says it will add seat belts to the attraction. In an October 23 letter to guests and passholders, President and CEO John Reilly said the company was reinforcing safety precautions, including installing seat belts on Goliath at Six Flags Over Georgia and other coasters with similar restraints. The fatal incident happened on October 12 at the park outside Atlanta. Police said Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem, 42, was ejected from his seat, struck other riders and fell beneath the attraction. A relative told ABC News that Kariem was visiting with family to celebrate his niece’s birthday and was seated beside her. He worked as an IT manager, teacher and robotics coach at an Atlanta school. Goliath used a lap-bar restraint without a backup seat belt. Investigators have not announced what caused Kariem’s ejection, and the addition of seat belts does not establish that a specific equipment failure caused the incident. Six Flags has also hired independent engineers and ride inspection specialists to review safety procedures across its parks. Georgia’s Goliath remains closed pending the necessary safety reviews and clearances, with no reopening date announced. “I know trust is earned through actions and not words,” Reilly wrote.
