"I would pick Ted Cruz to be the next Supreme Court justice," Trump said. Then he explained why. Democrats would vote for Cruz "100 percent," Trump said, because "they hate" him and want him out of Congress. And Republicans would vote for him "100 percent" too, because "they can't stand him." That's the President of the United States, at a rally for Texas Republicans, telling a Texas crowd that his own party can't stand their senator. And he did it while talking about a lifetime seat on the highest court in the country. Trump has floated the idea before, often using it to poke fun at how little Cruz's Senate colleagues like him, according to The Hill. But Cruz has made clear he wants no part of it. According to the Associated Press, Cruz told Sean Hannity last month that his answer was not just no, but hell no. Trump said it anyway. It was the same night Trump went after Ken Paxton, the Republican Senate nominee he came to Texas to help, mocking Paxton's body in front of his own voters, according to CNN. So in one rally, Trump insulted the Texas Republican running for the Senate and the Texas Republican already sitting in it. This is how Trump treats the Supreme Court. Not as the institution that decides your rights for a generation, but as a place to dump a senator nobody in Washington can stand. A seat on the Supreme Court is not a joke. Donald Trump should never be allowed to pick another justice.
