@yellow.takes: Durban is planning to build a massive 400MW AI Data Centre and the numbers are terrifying. Here’s what you need to know: The Power Guzzler: This "monster" facility could consume ONE-QUARTER of eThekwini’s entire electricity supply. ⚡️ The Cost: A staggering R160 Billion ($10 Billion) partnership with a South Korean consortium. Location: Planned for Amanzimtoti, right on environmentally sensitive land near the Lovu River. 🌊 The Risk: Beyond the power drain, these centers need millions of liters of water daily for cooling. In a city already struggling with water and lights, can we afford this? 📉 The municipality says it will bring jobs, but at what cost to our grid? 🤨 What do you think? Is this "digital progress" or a disaster waiting to happen? 👇 Video clip: Diary of a CEO Image: Daily Maverick #Durban #eThekwini #SouthAfrica #loadshedding ding #SaveDurban
Durban already suffers from water issues as it is, this will mean more water shortage for longer periods for surrounding communities

Do we really need AI more than WATER?!?!?

Why can't the data center build it's own desalination plant, sharing fresh water with the community will lead to water shortages.

It wont use tap water … it will have its own water purification system

please. nobody is building a data centre in a country that has loadshedding

more jobs though. these data centers need to be maintained. the data center this lady is talking about runs on gas turbine generators because Elon Musk saw it cheaper than to building a PowerPlant that could have benefited the local community. as for the fresh water, can't we just use the sea water?

There are already companies in KZN that have energy and water consumption in excess of this data centre. They don't run from the same grid as the municipality.

Grassroot problems show the cracks in the planning, that wants to leap forward or take flight when they are not anchored. Durban infrastructure is already inadequate to cater for people as is. We watch with bated breath.

KZN Is Calling :
these things use their own generators , sometimes they even use jet engine generators they weren't going to use much of the grid energy, that said with current fuel prices this thing is probably already DOA now.

Durban has a shortage of water supply to it community as we speak, how much more when they've built this data centre

but that water is being 95% reticulated. They use the same amount power as what mining or smelters would use. the only downside is dat they don't employ a lot of ppl after construction
