@theculturedump: Here is my German Gothic READING LIST. Gothic stories became popular in Germany at the end of the 18thC, coinciding with the Gothic apogee in Britain! People simply couldn’t get enough of fantastical stories about knights, robbers, and ghosts. In Germany, these genres became known as the Ritter-, Räuber-, and Schauerroman: novels of chivalry, banditry, and terror. Sometimes, these stories involved folklore and fairytales, or ‘Märchen’. German Gothic forms part of their Romantic ‘Sturm Und Drang’ (‘Storm and Stress’) movement. Think of melodrama, the sublime, and heightened emotions. Here are some of the most important texts in this genre: 1. Gottfried August Bürger, ‘Lenore’ (1773/4) 2. Friedrich Schiller, ‘Die Räuber’ / ‘the Robbers’(1781) 3. Karl Friedrich Kahlert (Lawrence Flammenberg), ‘The Necromancer’ (1780s/90s) 4. Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe, ‘Faust: Part I’ (1790) 5. Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué, ‘Undine’ (1811) 6. Ludwig Tieck, ‘Die Runenberg’ (1812) 7. E.T.A. Hoffman, ‘The Devil’s Elixirs’ (1815) and ‘The Sandman’ (1816) [+ Sigmund Freud’s essay on ‘The Uncanny’ (1919)] 8. Albert Bitzius (Jeremias Gotthelf), ‘The Black Spider’ (1842) Danke, auf Wiedersehen! #bookstagram #BookTok #german #gothic #literature

It makes me so happy to see E.T.A. Hoffmann mentioned as he writes such good gothic/horror/dark romantism stories 🥲
Another very famous work is 'The Sorrows of Young Werther' by Goethe. It's often the one story that is told to describe the era of Sturm and Drang best and influenced other authors that came after heavily. 😊

German Romantism Scolar here: Thank you for the Video and for teaching me something 🥰
(some of these are considered 'romantic' works in German literature studies, so it's interesting how they are viewed in English)

This made me want to finally read in German after living in Germany for 3 years 😭 the only authors I’ve read so far in the original language are Kafka and Thomas Mann because I’m so terrified of the vocabulary

We read the Black Spider in 7th grade (in German class) and it gave me nightmares. btw did you know that Ludwig Tieck (together with August Schlegel) translated Shakespeare to German. These translations are still gold standard today.

"Der Schimmelreiter" by Theodor Storm is also a nice gothic novel. Students are still haunted by this book. 😄

Loved Faust, the first part of the play was dope but second part was hard to understand. Will be looking at these other titles too

Thanks. I have only read Faust. German pronunciation not too bad, but needs a bit of homework. IE is pronounced like the EE in leek. Most egregious error - the letter W in German is pronounced like the English V.

Faust actually belongs to Weimarer Klassik, but it has some influences from Sturm und Drang

drang is not always only stress it can also be a kind of passion or the inner feeling that you have to do sth., go somewhere or to be with someone. the teenage years are also often described as the „Sturm und drang“ time of a humans
