It comes from the Qur’an, for example in Surah Al-Ahzab (33:33), where women are told not to display themselves like in the times of جاهلية. But how that looks in practice is where you get a range of opinions. For me personally, I try to keep it simple and intentional. I wear loose clothing. I cover my hair and neck properly. Most days I’m in a khimar. I don’t wear makeup. …and I was still accused of tabarruj. Over a clip.
