the tool we used to use to separate the two nuts was called a pork chop. At least up north where I'm from. 🤣

Interesting Down here in Australia we only have a stud and one nut holding a set of duel wheels on 👍 never had a problem only if the nut comes loose you lose both wheels 😁

the plastic rings you are talking about is we would put them in between the two wheels that way you could run steel wheels on the inside and put the aluminaum wheels on the outside to keep the steel fuseing to the aluminaum wheels and it will fuse together i spent a hour one time getting them apart

Plastic rings were to stop the rims from locking together over time

Also called stud pilot. The tool that looks a bit like a short wrench, we call that the pork chop in the tire industry. And those black plastic rings were meant to try and prevent corrosion and bonding of the mating surfaces. We definitely used them to prevent marring the finish.

Anti-seize is your best friend on stud pilot wheels. Another tip, is when you remove the outside tire, always tighten the inner wheel up. If the thimble is loose, when you put outside tire on, it will break wheel stud every time.
