@thom.code: Why Doesn’t Advertised Storage Match Actual Storage Welcome to the MCS100 series, where I will explain 100 random topics in Math and Computer Science over 100 days. Today is Day x, and today’s topic is: Si Prefix vs Binary Prefix SI prefixes (kilo, mega) represent decimal powers of 10, used for standard measurement, while binary prefixes (kibi, mebi) represent powers of 2, primarily used for computing memory and data storage.

I mean the manufacturer does use the correct unit. it's your operating system that shows GB where it actually means GiB

It's actually called 2 different things, a -bit suffix (kilobit, megabit, gigabit, etc.) is in increments of 1000, while a -byte suffix (kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte, etc.) is in 1024 increments

They did not trick you. They advertised what they sold, because we are more exposed to the decimal; it's easier to understand. The binary system used by the computers only causes confusion, not deception. You still get the correct advertised amount. The two terabytes you paid for aka 2000 gigabytes is there, you just see it as tebibytes, not terabytes. It's still the same 2,000,000,000,000 bytes.

You lose 7%. Use the size you think you’re getting, multiply by 93% and you’ll see the size that you’re really getting.
