@philosophyminis: Some people are fixated on being different. They are obsessed with breaking the mould, being new, and being exciting. And so, they become trapped by their own obsession. They think that ‘choice’ means ‘being contrary.’ They think ‘freedom’ means ‘doing what other people haven't done.’ These are what Simone de Beauvoir calls the ‘adventurers,’ and they are slaves to their own need to assert themselves all of the time. In her Ethics of Ambiguity, de Beauvoir argues that to live authentically and to live well means to commit to the life that you want. This means we need to take control of our lives, even if it means going against the mainstream or challenging the proper or the serious way to do things. Don't marry because you are told to. Don't have kids because you are expected to. Don't get a 9-to-5 job because that's the norm. But the problem the adventurer has is that they are so determined to reject the mainstream that they end up living a life that they don't actually want. They live their lives confusing freedom with being different, when freedom actually means doing what you want. As de Beauvoir puts it, 'the adventurer throws himself into his undertakings with zest, into exploration, conquest, war, speculation, love, politics and he does not attach himself to the end at which he aims, only to his conquest. He likes action for its own sake.’ Just because it's bold, fresh, original, exciting, and different does not mean it is yours. True freedom, according to Simone de Beauvoir, means sitting down and deciding what you actually want in life. Sometimes that will be contrary, it will be different, but sometimes it will be the mainstream. But the important point is that you have decided, and that you have control of your life.

Kind of reminded me of my own self in a way. I felt like trying to reach for the heights, doing stuff people don't usually want or can force themselves to do would be my sort of way of finding a boulder to push, filling the void. And it is a great thing to fill the void with. Its just that I guess you shouldn't focus and rely on it too much. This archetype of the adventurer, even though I never heard of it before, based on this very surface-level-y introduction to it really reminded me of Camus' Absurd Hero in the face of Sisyphus. Adding to the point I made in the last paragraph it's probably very important to understand that for Sisyphus, the boulder and the struggle itself aren't the focus, but, rather, a way to fill an otherwise mostly empty situation, in which there is just him, the mountain and the boulder. The focus should be not on the boulder but on his own self, with boulder being merely a distraction? I guess Thank you for providing some food for thought!
