In my psychological lens, sending jesus down was not just to pay for their sins but also to strengthen their belief on God. Had God just forgave them, then they wouldn't have known God fully. But with jesus, humans saw miracles. They saw a God and they believed on Him. Jesus also left apostles to minister his church, spreading his word across nations

God's righteousness demanded a perfect life for the life of Adam that was lost so what was needed to pay for the ransom was not God but a perfect man that was sinless and obedient to God to take the place of Adam and all the suffering and death we deserve as Romans 5:15 says, it wasn't God that gave his life for us but he gave something more valuable to us the life of his only begotten son who he loved more than anything else this gives us the chance to have our sins forgiven and be able to have a personal relationship with God and have everlasting life
