Jonathan Lipnicki kept saying it off-camera while they were shooting, just as a kid being a kid. Cameron Crowe heard it, loved how specific and random it felt, and decided to write it into the scene. It instantly made Ray feel real instead of “written.” The living room scene with Tom Cruise is one of those rare moments where structure loosened up. A lot of their interaction was shaped through improvisation, which is why the rhythm feels so natural. Cruise isn’t performing at the kid, he’s responding to him. That’s the real takeaway.
