@nguyenfoodstall: Vietnamese aunties love language: calling you fat 🥲. Let’s learn the difference between being called “Mập” and “Béo” 🍑🍑🍑#learningvietnamese #vietnamese #vietnameseculture
The beauty standard in Vietnam is just crazy. My very petite very thin sister was called curvy by a tailor. I think it's just none of their business if you are married, fat, how old you are, and how much money you earn.

She was telling you “bự”, meaning “tall” or “muscular”, and i don’t think she was saying it in an offensive way at all.

She called you a big girl, doesn’t literally mean fat. Some mothers in the countryside of Vietnam want their children to grow up big and strong. As they somehow reflect their efforts/ sucess in raising the child.

It doesn’t help though when you’re a young girl growing up and people calling you fat and yeah you aren’t like super skinny but I look back at photos. I’m like I wasn’t really fat and that really affected me a lot about my body image self-esteem was very self-conscious and still very self-conscious and actually and now I’m actually probably fat so

It makes me question why being called “fat” is seen as offensive in the first place. The issue isn’t the word…it’s the meaning society has loaded onto it. Challenging that stigma is key if we want to move away from fatphobia.
Because when we immediately label the word as offensive, we also reinforce the idea that being fat is something negative or undesirable. That reaction doesn’t dismantle stigma,it quietly sustains it. Reframing “fat” as a neutral descriptor, rather than something harmful, is part of shifting the conversation toward respect, acceptance, and a more honest understanding of body diversity.
