I think it's a thing where Iris/The GoGoo Dolls are an alternative sound that girls and women also liked and made very popular as opposed to the "edgier" grunge and alternative bands of that era. Therefore toxic boys & men had to denigrate it as "trash" or "not real rock/alternative." I live in Seattle and my boy cousins used to give me shit about liking Goo Goo Dolls all the time, but all the women and girls I knew loved it. It's nostalgic because everyone knows it because people liked it, just not edgy jack holes who were low key just a little misogynistic.
